0First, we have each child pack their own backpack or travel bag. We give helpful suggestions, but let them pick what they want to bring. These are the sort of items they generally pack:
- A drawing book with crayons- we love Step-by-Step books or the pocket-sized drawing books from Usborne Books & More.
- Sticker book - or another type of activity book.
- Interactive book - anything with flaps
- A reading book - nonfiction, picture book, or chapter book.
- Small toys - small animal figurines, action figures, animals, or a baby doll
- Something "new" and exciting - this might be something BRAND NEW from the Target Dollar Spot, something they haven't played with in a while, or something that is reserved JUST for road trips. For this past trip, we tried these new Window Jammers. They are basically a selfie-stick with little vehicles so that your child can pretend their vehicle is driving on the road beside them. They were a great tool for letting my kids' imaginations run wild.
- Plus snacks! I usually pack a separate bag of snacks, but you could have your child pack those too.
So... how do we survive road-trips?
- Generally, the first half of our trip is spent with the kids entertaining themselves with their bags. They cycle through their books, toys, and snacks. They are generally pretty content.
- We make a pit stop. We gas up, take a potty break, and get a meal (I love taking something to go because it keeps them occupied that much longer!).
- We watch a movie or play on tablets. I prefer a movie that they all watch because then my kids don't fight over who gets what's device and they expect to "settle in" for a little while.
