Over Thanksgiving, our family participated in a service project (a repeat from @brightnightevent). Our family donated and assembled 100 birthday bags for a local women's shelter. Each bag had a book, cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, candles, balloons, streamers, a small toy, tissue paper, and a birthday card (@britedesignsstudio) colored by the kids. It was all packaged into gift bags, so that moms in that shelter are able to celebrate their child's birthday even in hard circumstances. My husband and I were able to deliver them to a shelter and it was overwhelming to see our bags filling their hallway. We hope that it brings feelings of love to many moms and kids.

It's election night!
🇺🇸 If you haven't voted yet, run to the polls!
If you already have, thank you! I am so proud to be an American and I love books about America too! Here are my Usborne favorites:
- Shine-a-Light Wonders of the USA - A flashlight book with famous American landmarks? Yes, please! One of our newest in our flashlight book series.
- Americanly - the second book in the series, following Animally. This book is rhyming, fun to read, and compares your love to majestic/big/breathtaking landmarks around the country.
- What Does the President Look Like? - Usborne Books & More no longer carries this one, but it's definitely worth finding! How did people know what the president looked like before we had cameras? Go through the ages to see how people knew about their president.
Why is reading so beneficial? Here are just a few of the reasons! What stands out to you the most? From Ebook Friendly
"She remembered who she was and that she loved to fly.
As the doubts of others fell away, she rose into the sky.
Cordelia began to fly again - to sing and play and soar.
Because what others thought, didn't matter anymore."

Cordelia just GETS life! I love a book that inspires my kids and this one is a winner.
Between this book and the "become/be fearless" bracelet set my daughter NEEDED, this girl should never have any self-doubt!

Do you want to know what's better than a flashlight for bedtime reading?
🔦Definitely this adorable @kinderglo hippo nightlight! It holds a charge, so it's the perfect bedtime snuggle buddy AND changes colors. My older kids were jealous that Quinn got this one. It looks like I need to order more!
Peace out, mamas!
✌🏻️I hope you all survived the day! There's a bubble bath and a new book calling my name.

It's October, so it's time to break out the Halloween books!
🎃 What are your favorites?
We have a LOT of Halloween favorites, but these are some of our favorite Usborne ones:- That's not my monster - this touchy-feely book is DARLING and has some great textures! This is great for newborns to preschoolers!
- Muddle and Match: Monsters - this book has three different sections, so your little one can mix and match the monster's body. If you match up the legs, torso, and head of a monster, you'll get to read a tongue-twister alliteration. If you mix them up, it makes for a pretty funny story! Toddlers will love flipping through the board pages and preschoolers will laugh at the fun stories!
- Pop-Up Haunted House - My son absolutely LOVES ghosts, so Halloween is a pretty big deal around here. Pop-up Haunted House has the most beautiful illustrations, intricate pop-ups, and is sure to be a favorite at your house!
- Billie B. Brown Mysteries: Spooky House - This is great for readers 8+. This is an older vision of our standard Billie B. Brown books, with the same well-loved character! Follow along as Billie, Jack (from Hey Jack!), and other friends explore the spooky house down the street!
- Illustrated Ghost Stories - This is great for 9+. It has multiple stories, great illustrations, and a ribbon bookmark to save your place! This is part of one of my favorite stories!
- True Stories of Ghosts: Do you believe in ghosts? Included in this book are REAL accounts from people who definitely believe in ghosts and believe they have encountered them. Recommended for ages 10+.

• If you help Coralie build her shiplap wall, she's going to then need it painted.
• After you paint the shiplap wall, she'll decide the whole downstairs needs a new paint job too!

I know that a child's interpretation isn't always how things were intended, so I've been trying to keep that in mind. My Jaden is a reader. He loves it! He wakes up early to read, reads during errands, and reads at night. He typically reads at least 2 hours/day.
He came home from school the other day and said this:
"Mom, you know how last year we used to write how long I ACTUALLY read? Like - all of the hours? I think this year, we should only write '30 minutes.' Someone asked our teacher if we should write 2 hours if we read that long (instead of the required time) and she said we should never do that, but we should go outside instead."

Mind you... he also spends hours outside, but reading is definitely one of his favorite pastimes.
So - the teacher may have been trying to stress the importance of playing too, but it left my 9-year-old feeling embarrassed about reading "too much." I don't think a child should ever feel like that. Thoughts?
UPDATE: Thank you to everyone for your feedback! I felt so supported in my worry, but also had people helping me feel less worried about it too. Thank you! Here's what I heard from followers on Facebook and Instagram:
Kaylene Murray Nope reading is good. Better than tv or video games. As long as he plays outside sometime nothing wrong with reading. I think I would talk to the teacher. Possible kids are lying about how long.
Jordan Trejo
😕 this makes me sad. Yes going outside and playing is important (I was a PE teaching major) but if he's making the most of errands time and at night and still active he should get to spend his free time the way he likes (especially with something as beneficial as reading!).
- amberlenoraI don't love that AT ALL!!!
- charlene.pinpinHmm, definitely have the same feeling 😐 ...a child that reads, especially a boy (!) is an AWESOME thing!! I don't agree with her response at all. I'm sorry she made him feel as if he should "hide" his love of books. It would bug me too...just know, you've done an amazing job getting your kids to love reading! I'm hoping my son reaches that point! 📚❤️
- mmatesenWhat a strange thing for a teacher to say. He should be rewarded for his love of reading! Reading improves every aspect of your life!
- rehloilsI think she needed to explain it better. Kids take everything to heart and to think one flip comment could feel like he needs to hide his reading is sad
- kaycieqI'd be upset too. Who knows what she actually said, but since that's how Jaden took it, she should have definitely worded it differently.
- mrscallscandyI say we don't tell kids what they should like doing and let them each decide for themselves! If he likes to read, let the boy read!
- amomstakeI have an avid reader and I think it's all about balance. I think it is strange a teacher said that though.
- madelinecasey_I was just like him when I was little! But he shouldn't be embarrassed. Reading is one of the best things he can be doing! Especially if he is going outside too 😊
- lacy.eileenAw poor guy! It's great that he loves to read so much.
- janicetwitchellMy 9 year daughter is the same way. She could read all day and not mind. But she also spends tons of time outside so I don't see any harm.
- fitmissioncompleteWwwooowww! Those books! You're all amazing!! THAT you should be proud of!
- laurenjparryI wish I enjoyed reading that much!

We had our Back-to-School dinner last night! I imagined my children would tell us their hopes and dreams, but what really happened was:
• Quinn started eating the centerpiece apple, so Bailey cried because the decor was ruined.
🍎
• Jaden asked if my homemade lasagna was SUPPOSED to be a little burnt.
🙈
• Justin (the hubby, who is only supposed to sing my praises) decided to wipe off the cross on the uppercase "J" on his place setting.
🖊 He said if it was a back-to-school dinner, I should definitely write my "J's" correctly.
😝Wrong time to tease, dear husband!

I was a nanny all through high school. My degree is in child development. When I was pregnant, I was SURE I would "nail" this whole mom thing. That's when God laughed and sent me my beautiful, fiery, independent, curve-ball children. I had to humble up really quickly!
The one thing I had to learn right off the bat was to SIMPLIFY my life! That's one of the reasons I love Baby Cubby! They simplify my life by doing all of the research for me and only carry the BEST products in their store and online. Buying from them is a guaranteed way to make sure I have the best of the best - without having to do all of the leg work!
Baby Cubby has put out the most helpful guide for picking out the perfect baby carrier for you. I really wish I had had this when my babies were small! With Jaden and Bailey, I used a baby backpack. I could never use it for long because it KILLED my back, but it was still worth it to be able to be hands-free every now and then.

| baby wrap with Quinn - 2013 |
Quinn basically LIVED in his wrap for the first year of his life. Bailey, who was 3 at the time, decided that a wrap was really the only way to go, so she started toting her bear around with her in a scarf-turned-wrap.
| Stuffed animals need baby wraps too, right? |
Baby carriers have come a LONG way since our make-shift scarf wrap (ha!). Now I just need a new baby, so I can buy myself one of the latest baby carriers! What type of baby carrier do you love?

I can't start cooking without Bailey (6) or Quinn (3) running in to help! When we were gifted the new Start to Cook book at Usborne National Convention in June, I knew it would be a hit at our house! My kids have been cooking up a storm! I love that this book has step-by-step illustrations AND instructions, which makes it perfect for non-readers and readers alike!
It has a section on nutrition:
Tabbed sections with overviews of each food category:
And, best of all, lots of delicious recipes!

Even when your kids can read on their own, it's important to make time to read aloud with them. It's a bonding experience that will keep reading a happy pastime rather than a required chore. My husband and I have chapter books we've started with each child. The kids look forward to reading more chapters together. 💙 Here's my top 5 read-aloud chapter books:
1. The Impossible Quest - I'm a BIG fan of series! I love having the option of continuing right along when my child falls in love with a book! This new series is the perfect fantasy, suspenseful series to read-aloud. Because of the suspenseful parts of the book, I would recommend this for ages 9+ or reading level 10+.
5. Extreme Adventures - This is a great read-aloud for 8+ and reading level 9+. This series has action, suspense, and scary animals! My 9-year-old has LOVED reading this series allowed with my husband. It's action-packed enough that adults love it too!

2. Illustrated Stories - The one featured is Illustrated Stories from Greek Mythology, but there are SO many in this series! Our illustrated stories generally have between 10-15 titles in each book with a ribbon bookmark to save your place and are perfect for bedtime. This series is a great read-aloud for 5+ or reading level ages 8+.
3. Penny Dreadful - Penny is some kind of mischievous! Trouble ends up finding her wherever she goes! This hilarious series is a great read-aloud for 6+ or reading level 8+.
4. Fairy Ponies - Come on an adventure with magic, fairies, and ponies! What could be better? Great read-aloud for 5+ or reading level ages 7-8+. I love that these still have illustrations throughout, which are great for a younger reader.
